Coal India Limited (coalindia) Sharpens R&D Focus; Targets ₹1,900 Cr Investment by Fy2030
Coal India Limited (COALINDIA) plans to invest ₹1,900 Cr in R&D by FY2030, intensifying focus on innovation and technology.
Coal India Limited (CIL) has intensified its Research & Development (R&D) initiatives, targeting an investment of around ₹1,900 Crores by FY 2030. Responding to the evolving energy landscape, CIL’s transformational R&D thrust has gained momentum with the establishment of the National Centre for Coal and Energy Research (NaCCER) in FY 2024-25. This hub-and-spoke modelled R&D centre has shifted the company’s focus from proof-of-concept studies to prototype development, corresponding to Technology Readiness Level (TRL) -4 and above.
Enhanced R&D Expenditure
CIL’s R&D expenditure has quadrupled to ₹245 Crores in FY 2024-25, up from ₹61 Crore in FY 2023-24. This significant increase aligns with the Department of Public Enterprises’ mandate for annual R&D expenditure averaging one percent of the Profit Before Tax of the preceding three years. To further bolster its structured innovation framework, CIL has formulated a comprehensive R&D Policy.
Collaboration and Innovation
Strengthening industry-academia collaboration, CIL has established three Centres of Excellence (CoE) at Premier IITs: Centre of Clean Coal Energy and Net Zero (CLEANZ) in Hyderabad, Centre for Sustainable Energy (CSE) in Madras, and Innovation in Mining (IMiN) at IIT (ISM) Dhanbad. These centres function as research spokes under NaCCER, undertaking pilot-scale research, prototype development, and technology validation. CIL has committed ₹253 crore to these CoEs, to be released in phases. Currently, 19 R&D projects with a total outlay of ₹225 crore are being executed by reputed scientific institutions under the direct oversight of NaCCER. Additionally, 13 research projects with pilot-scale research and prototype development are underway in the CoEs.
The research portfolio spans several strategic areas. CLEANZ focuses on advanced research on clean coal energy and net-zero technologies, including enhanced coal bed methane recovery, carbon capture, utilisation and storage, mineral beneficiation, recovery of rare earth elements and critical minerals, high-ash coal gasification, and syngas utilisation. CSE is concentrating on sustainable materials, circular economy, mine repurposing, environmental remediation, feasibility assessment of micro modular nuclear reactors, and advanced wastewater treatment technologies. IMiN is dedicated to capacity building through research fellowships and developing solutions to mutually identified mining challenges. CIL has also forged international collaborations with Ergo Exergy, Canada, for the Underground Coal Gasification Project at ECL; Ericsson, Sweden, for implementing 5G technologies in the Jhanjra underground mine; and CSIRO, Australia, to advance collaborative research.

Coal India Limited (coalindia) Sees Production and Dispatch Surge as Monsoon Recedes
Coal India Limited (COALINDIA) boosts production and dispatch by 67% and 75% respectively as monsoon impacts wane in September 2026.
Coal India Limited (COALINDIA) is witnessing a significant uptick in production and dispatch as the monsoon season recedes. Northern Coalfields Limited (NCL), one of CIL’s major coal-producing subsidiaries, has seen a 67% increase in coal production and a 75% surge in supply as of 8th September compared to the average from 1st to 3rd September 2026.
Enhanced Production and Dispatch
NCL’s total coal production for FY 2026-27 stood at 51.43 MT, while its supplies reached 55 MT by 8th September, marking a notable recovery from the operational challenges posed by heavy rainfall. The company’s rake loading through Indian Railways increased to 41 rakes on 8th September, compared with an average of 19 rakes per day during 1–3 September. This improvement aligns with CIL’s broader objective to maintain a robust and reliable coal supply chain for the nation.
Operational Improvements
The recovery has been supported by a series of measures on the ground. With mine accessibility improving, NCL has been able to move men, machinery, and coal more efficiently. Priority restoration of internal roads has improved the movement of coal to Coal Handling Plants and railway sidings, while continuous dewatering has helped reopen mining areas affected by water accumulation. Moreover, NCL has stepped up engagement with road-based consumers, particularly power utilities, to increase the deployment of tippers and speed up coal lifting.
At the CIL level, average daily coal production rose by 40%, from an average of 1.36 Million Tonne (MT) per day during the first three rain-affected days of September to 1.91 MT on September 8, 2026. The improvement in production is driving higher dispatches, with coal supplies to the power sector showing an uptrend. Average daily dispatches to the power sector rose by 27%, from an average of 1.37 MT per day during the first three days of September to 1.74 MT on September 8, 2026.
The improving trend in September provides a positive outlook for CIL’s production and dispatch, with coal supplies to power plants gradually moving towards pre-monsoon levels.
