State Bank of India SBIN Basel III Event

State Bank of India (SBI), the country’s largest lender, raised ₹4,691 crore today through its first Basel III compliant Additional Tier 1 bond issuance for the current financial year. The bonds carry a perpetual tenor with a call option after 5 years and each anniversary date thereafter, rated AA+ with a stable outlook from CRISIL Ratings Limited and CARE Ratings Limited.

Robust Investor Response

The issue attracted a robust response from investors, with bids of more than 2 times against the base issue size of ₹3,000 crores. The total number of bids received was 89, indicating participation from a diverse set of qualified institutional bidders including provident funds, pension funds, mutual funds, and banks.

Significance of the Issuance

Shri C S Setty, Chairman, noted that the wider participation and heterogeneity of bids demonstrated the trust investors place in the country’s largest bank. Based on the response, the bank has decided to accept ₹4,691 crore at a coupon rate of 7.75% payable annually. This issuance is significant as it allows the bank to diversify and raise long-term non-equity regulatory capital.

As a result, SBI has successfully tapped into a broad spectrum of investors, reinforcing its financial stability and growth potential in the long run.

State moves sideways over three months, with neither buyers nor sellers taking control. The PEG of 0.77 signals undervaluation relative to growth. It is a potential re-rating candidate. D/E of 1.22 is elevated. As a result, debt servicing will compress free cash flow in a high-rate environment. The stock holds at 51% of its 52-week range with RSI at 45. In other words, neither side has a clear edge right now. Revenue grows at 12.2% and profits at 14.4% CAGR, with D/E of 1.22. Meanwhile, the stock dips 6.8% in three months without any fundamental deterioration. Consequently, the stock quietly becomes cheaper relative to earnings power. For long-term investors, that is a feature. Check Fundamentals of State Bank of India.
