Reasons why a company exhibits high PE

An investor looks for companies with low PE attractive owing to their undervaluedness. However, higher PE could be because of any of the following reasons:

EPS

The Earnings per share displays the fair value of a company’s net income. A lower Net income decreases the Earnings per share. As EPS lies in the denominator of the PE ratio, the lower the EPS higher will be the PE.

Market conditions

A company’s performance is affected by macroeconomic factors. The companies that exhibit deep cyclicality will get involved first in an economic slowdown. Food, agriculture, and agricultural goods are defensive to economic changes. Whereas the consumer durable industry exhibits semi-cyclicality and the capital goods industry exhibits intense cyclicality.

Exceptional future growth prospects

A stock market is where the business takes place depending on traders’ sentiment. If the trader’s sentiments correspond with the company’s outstanding performance the market doesn’t prevent from rapid shooting up of the market’s price. This could contribute to a higher PE ratio implying overvaluation for the company.

Why does DMart display high PE?

Let us see the company’s performance to determine the reason.

As we discussed food occupies 56.03% of the total share of revenue. This product category will always have high demand in the market and its sales are negligibly affected by economic conditions.

The company started its business in Mumbai in 2002. The company followed a cluster-based expansion strategy which resulted in a gradual but strong presence in 12 states with the total stores counting to 324 in 2023. This number was 284 in FY22-23 and the numbers has gone up by 40 stores/ year.

Financial performance of DMart

DMart has exhibited good financial performance in FY23. For FY23, consolidated revenue from operations exhibited a growth of 38% YoY. And the EBITDA stood at 46% growth from the previous year. The Net cash flow from operations that includes PAT + Depreciation – Deferred tax stood at an increase of 52%. This decent financial performance could have contributed to higher growth PE. With better performance, the investors begin to anticipate robust growth prospects leading to a higher valuation of the company.

What do we infer from the article?

In this article, we discussed the business of DMart and the listing details of the company in NSE. We covered the reasons why the PE of the stock could go high and understood the key financial information of DMart. The sector PE for the retail sector is 45.1x, which tells us the PE of DMart is so high, compared to the PE of the Indian retailing sector. With healthy growth potential owing to its better YoY revenue performance and expansion of retail stores, the company’s PE is expected to increase. Also, the company’s online presence known as DMart Ready has registered its presence in 22 cities contributing to acquiring future growth opportunities by giving competition to Jio Mart and BigBasket.

HDFC Bank’s Future: A Realistic Take on Its Market Potential for next 20 years

Hello Financial Wizards! Let’s Talk HDFC Bank’s Future

Hey there, savvy investors and finance enthusiasts! Today, let’s dive into a hot topic that’s been stirring up the investment community โ€“ the future of HDFC Bank. Can it really grow 100x in the next 20 years? Some say yes, while others, including a former banker, are raising their eyebrows. Let’s break this down together. ๐Ÿ’ฌ๐Ÿ”

A $16 Trillion Dream: Is It Really Possible?

So, here’s the deal: HDFC Bank currently sits at a market cap of around $160 billion. There’s talk about it reaching a staggering $16 trillion in 20 years. Mind-blowing, right? But let’s not get carried away just yet. ๐ŸŒŒ๐Ÿ’ธ

The Banking Battlefield: It’s Tough Out There!

The banking sector is like a gladiator arena. It’s ultra-competitive, and banks have to constantly up their game to keep customers happy. If they don’t, there’s always another bank ready to swoop in. And let’s not forget the threats from neobanks, online banks, credit unions… you name it. ๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ๐Ÿฆ

HDFC Bank vs. The World of Digital Banking

Facing the Future Head-On

HDFC Bank has been a juggernaut, no doubt. But the world of banking is changing at a breakneck pace. We’re talking about digital revolutions with neobanks and online banking platforms. These players are rewriting the rules, making it tough for traditional banks to keep up. ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿš€

The Numbers Game: ROCE and Growth

HDFC’s Return on Capital Employed (ROCE) is currently around 6-7%. Now, here’s a nugget of wisdom from Charlie Munger: a stock’s long-term returns roughly equal its ROCE. So, if the capital compounds at 6%, how can we expect a 25% CAGR in market cap? It’s a head-scratcher, isn’t it? ๐Ÿค”๐Ÿ’น

Leverage and Growth: A Double-Edged Sword

Sure, HDFC has a higher Return on Equity (RoE) at 18% thanks to leverage. And yes, it can grow faster than its ROCE. But even then, expecting it to grow at an old rate of 25% seems like a stretch, especially given its size. ๐Ÿ“ˆโš–๏ธ

A Reality Check: Comparing Global Giants

The US Economy and JP Morgan

Let’s play a game of comparison. Imagine India in 20 years, matching today’s US economy. The biggest bank in the US, JP Morgan, is valued at around $500 billion, not even close to $1 trillion. So, expecting HDFC Bank to reach $16 trillion seems… well, a tad overoptimistic. ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ

The Big Picture: India’s GDP and HDFC Bank

Think about it โ€“ India’s GDP itself might hit $30 trillion in 20 years. So, picturing a single company, even HDFC Bank, at a $16 trillion market cap is, to put it mildly, a stretch. ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿ’ฐ

Wrapping Up: What’s the Smart Move?

As much as we love rooting for our favorite stocks, it’s crucial to stay grounded. In a world rapidly embracing new tech, even the mighty can struggle to outperform. So, as you strategize your investments, remember โ€“ the future is about adaptability, innovation, and realistic expectations. ๐Ÿš€๐Ÿง

And there you have it, folks! What do you think about HDFC Bank’s future? Is it a golden goose or a reality check waiting to happen? Drop your thoughts and let’s keep this conversation going! ๐Ÿ’ฌ๐Ÿ“Š
